    My PS1 collection (part 5)

I believe this topic is coming to an end now.

    *checks collection*

Yes, I just summed up the games I haven’t showed yet and I think this will be the final part. Soon i’ll share my Playstation 2 and 3 Games with you, but for now here are the final games from my Playstation 1 collection.

    Small Soldiers (1998)

What The box says: The Commando Elite have invaded Gorgon, and it’s up to you to blast Chip Hazzard’s boys back to their home planet… and beyond. So rally your allies and arm your weapons and let the battle begin.

What I say: I remember the first time I played this game and I thought it was really awesome. Especially the Chip vs Archer 2 player mode. I also really loved the movie when it came out (who didn’t?) so I rushed to get this. It was very addictive and I believe it still holds up as an awesome game today (especially for those that remember it). Plus you have Tommy Lee Jones voicing Chip Hazzard. That’s badass.

    Space Jam (1996)

What the box says: It’s the ultimate pick-up game. Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny vs. a mean team of outlandish alien Monstars! This is intergalactic hoops according to the big slam theory! Extraterrestrial dunks! Anti-gravitational alley-oops! Stellar gameplay! And a bunch of mini-games overstuffed with wacky cartoon mayhem! Earth just wasn’t big enough. Space Jam!

What I say: Oh, Space Jam. It was one of the earliest films that I can remember seeing at the cinema. I loved it and everyone I knew loved it. I even loved the free Space Jam toys that you could get from McDonald’s Happy Meals. What I don’t remember is the video game. I didn’t know this existed until I played it over a friends house (when I was about 10). It was okay, I’m not big on sport games but it provided some entertainment. However, playing it recently is kind of like re-watching the film. You remember it being really good, but now that you’re older you can see that it’s not. The gameplay gets very repetitive, the announcer will drive you bat-shit insane with it’s constant loop of phrases and overall it’s very lame (and obviously just a cash in game). I’ll admit, just like the film it’s cool for nostalgia, but it’s not a game you’ll want to play again any time soon.

    Spyro the Dragon (1998)

What the box says: The dragon lands have been taken over  by Gnasty Gnorc and his Gnorc army. All of the dragons have been transformed into crystal statues and only Spyro is left.

What I say: This is quite easily one of the best and creative platformers I played as a kid. The graphics were really good for the time, the controls were cool and the gameplay was awesome. Just like most nostalgic games, you can’t help but notice the graphics aren’t as great now, but it still holds up as a very fun game to revisit.

    Tombi (1998)

What the box says: Help Tombi through a magical world of mystery and magic as he tries to solve puzzles and help save the world from the evil komabuta Pigs! A unique combination of role-playing and platform adventure from whoopee Camp.

What I say: often appearing in “Best games you’ve never played” lists and due to featuring a fairly long and engrossing demo, Tombi has become highly sought-after by collectors. I played this on an early playstation demo, (just like many other people that I knew did) and although I really enjoyed it, I never had the chance to purchase it. For years I wondered what the rest of the game would be like and it’s very hard to believe this didn’t sell well. You can find the game on eBay, but at really ridiculous prices and sometimes (but rarely) at considerably low prices (In my case depending on how bad the seller decides to make the description, making it barely noticeable in listings). I still had to fight very hard, but luckily I won for a good price. Now as for the game itself, there are tons of side quests to keep you entertained, i’m still in the middle of playing it! The graphics and controls are really awesome and overall It’s very original and a highly addictive game.

    Tombi 2 (2000)

What the box says: Tombi and his friend Zippo are in search of Tombi’s girlfriend, Tabby. Was she kidnapped by the evil pigs? Is she safe? Tombi must use all of his agility, guile and cunning disguises to save Tabby and defeat the evil pigs once and for all.

What I say: I never knew there was a sequel, obviously because the first game didn’t sell well and I guess my attention was on other games. I’m still playing Tombi, So I can’t really say much about this, as I haven’t had a chance to fully experience this game yet. Well, except to check if the disc worked and from that I saw the graphics are still very good, and I expect if you’re familiar with Tombi, then it will be just as enjoyable or even more so with it’s continuing story.

Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! (1999)

What the box says: As space hero Buzz Lightyear, you’ve got your hands full. Your best buddy, Woody, has been kidnapped by a greedy toy collector and it’s going to be an all-out race against time to save him. It’s all up to you… Buzz Lightyear to the rescue!

What I say: I love Toy Story. The movies are awesome (especially Toy Story 3 now that i’ve seen it) In the beginning the only game you could play was Toy Story for the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo or Gameboy. I played the Genesis version and loved it. Although I could only play it when I visited my friend, who had a genesis because I was stuck with Super Nintendo (which was a good console, but I wasn’t crazy about getting too many games for it). So when I heard Toy Story 2 was coming out and there’d be a game for the Playstation, I was really excited. I bought the game almost immediately and loved every minute of it, especially when I’d complete a level and get sneak peek footage from the movie as a bonus. The graphics aren’t great but the game has many fun levels and puzzles and for those that remember it, it’s still fun to play.

    The End.

    The Last Exorcism (2010)

Over the past few years there have been a number of movies that have focused on exorcism or possession. (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Exorcism: The Possession of Gail Bowers, The Haunting in Connecticut, The Haunting of Molly Hartley). I love films about the supernatural, but these have never really appealed to me, simply because they are all pretty much the same film.

The first time I heard of The Last Exorcism, was when I saw the poster (above). My first thought was “another exorcism movie?” (as you can tell i’m not big on them). Then I saw the trailer, which I’ll admit intrigued me a little, but my main thought was “the found footage gimmick isn’t going to end, is it?”

Don’t get me wrong, I do think this particular style can be done well. The Blair Witch Project was creepy as shit at the time, so was Paranormal Activity (and still is). I also think Cloverfield was an awesome film and Rec was very enjoyable too. But it’s come to a point now where it seems everyone is going to try and cash in on this style. Quarantine in particular was an entire shot-for-shot remake of Rec, which in my opinion was really unnecessary, Diary of the Dead was complete shite and don’t get me started on Meadowoods

So anyway, although I was intrigued by the trailer, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see this in the cinema or not, since previous films with the similar subject matter have been disappointing to me. I eventually decided to give it a chance after hearing a lot good reviews and also because Piranha 3D has stupidly late times.

The Plot: focuses on an evangelical minister named Cotton, who over the years of performing exorcisms, decides to participate in a documentary chronicling his last exorcism, while exposing the fraud that it really is. Soon he agrees to help a teenage girl living on a remote Louisiana farm who may - or may not - be possessed by some sort of demon.

I really enjoyed this. I think i’ll definitely be getting it on dvd when it’s released. It’s not one of the most scariest films i’ve seen (as a lot of reviews suggest), but it sure is creepy. As the film deepens the atmosphere becomes very dark and unsettling, in a similar way that Paranormal Activity was, which was fun and made the viewing a lot more gripping. Even from the very beginning I was really into the story and the aspect of deciding if the girl was possessed or not was very intriguing.

The characters are very likeable, especially the minister Cotton played by Patrick Fabian. He’s very convincing in this movie and there’s never a moment where you’re tired of seeing him. I’d really like to see more movies with him in them.

The only problem I had though was the ending. It felt like one of those endings where the filmmakers couldn’t come up with something good to end, so they just came up with anything, in order to release it as soon as they can.

Yeah, that kinda sucks. It could have been really good if it at least continued with where it was going, for another 10 or so minutes, but it doesn’t and it felt very abrupt.

In conclusion, despite the ending it was still a very enjoyable and decently made film, that I recommend to all horror fans.

    Overall Rating: 8.5/10
